In Texas, water is no longer a given. It's a gamble.
Just ask Brian Schewe, a homeowner living just outside Boerne, Texas. When he bought his property, he had a choice to make: drill a well with questionable water quality for a hefty price tag or try to survive on rain alone.
“I live off of rainwater, totally,” Brian told KSAT 12 in a recent interview. “I don’t have a well because of the cost of the well, and the water’s bad. So I went with the rainwater.”
But as droughts stretched longer and rainfall became less predictable, Brian knew he needed a second option. Something reliable. Something off-grid.
Something that didn’t rely on wells or municipal supply.
That’s when he found about Aquaria Hydropack.
The Problem: Texas Is Running Out of Groundwater
Brian’s story isn’t unique. In fact, it’s becoming the norm.
Texas is facing a full-blown water crisis. Despite a historic $20 billion investment in water infrastructure, the state has refused to change its outdated water laws, especially the “rule of capture,” a law that allows any landowner to pump as much groundwater as they want, even if it dries up their neighbor’s well.
It’s a system that favors short-term gain over long-term survival and it’s pushing our aquifers to the brink.
Take the Ogallala Aquifer, for example. It's one of the largest groundwater sources in the U.S., and in Texas, 95% of its withdrawals go to agriculture. That leaves homeowners, especially those in rural or semi-rural areas, competing for what’s left. Experts say that unless something changes, the Ogallala could see a 50% decline by 2070.
Worse still, much of Central and South Texas has been under Extreme or Exceptional Drought status since March. In San Antonio, the Edwards Aquifer was pushed to unprecedented Stage 5 water restrictions in May and only recently downgraded to Stage 4. But even that “relief” comes with a huge cost: over 1,200 permit holders in key counties are now limited to 60% of their previous groundwater use.
For homeowners who depend on that water? That’s a terrifying future.
A Better Way: Pulling Water from Thin Air
That’s why more Texans are doing what Brian did: investing in an alternative water source including atmospheric water generators (AWGs) from Aquaria.
Instead of relying on the sky to rain or the ground to hold out just a little longer, Aquaria's AWG pulls moisture directly from the air and turns it into clean, drinkable water.
No drilling. No pumps. No delays. Just fresh, clean water within 24 hours.
Brian is now an Aquaria’s system owner and he uses Hydropack as a backup to his rainwater tanks. And in times when the skies don’t cooperate, the AWG steps in to make sure his household never runs dry.
Just recently, KSAT 12 visited Brian’s home to see how he set up his Aquaria Hydropack system.
In the video below, he walks through how the unit integrates seamlessly into his existing rainwater setup, and how Aquaria Hydropack helps him provide a reliable backup that kicks in when the tanks run low.
Why Texas Homeowners Are Searching for Alternative Water Sources
Searches for phrases like “how to get water without a well,” “rainwater vs well water in Texas,” or “backup water systems for drought” are trending upward on search engines.
And it’s no surprise why:
- Private wells are drying up.
- Municipal restrictions are tightening.
- Droughts are getting longer and more extreme.
Add to that rising costs for water hauling and drilling, and the choice becomes clear: Texans need self-reliant, sustainable water solutions and they need them now.
Why Aquaria Works When Other Systems Fail
Aquaria’s Hydropack series isn’t just a new way to get water, it’s a scalable technology.
- Independent: No reliance on public utilities or groundwater.
- Sustainable: Uses only ambient humidity and renewable energy.
- Clean: Produces water that exceeds EPA and WHO standards.
- Scalable: Systems available for single homes or entire properties.
Whether you're homesteading, living off-grid, or just want to avoid the uncertainty of another dry season, Aquaria gives you the freedom to take water into your own hands.
