What Happens to Your Water When the Power Goes Out

An atmospheric water generator does not sit outside that problem. It runs on electricity like everything else in your house. What it does, paired with storage and a backup power source, is turn "days without water" into arithmetic you can actually solve.

If you take one thing from this article, take this: when the Texas grid goes down — a February freeze like Uri, or a Gulf Coast hurricane knocking out the pumps — stored water is your supply, and the Hydropack is what keeps refilling it. Everything below is the math behind that sentence, written for homeowners who already run backup power and want real numbers.

What actually goes down when the grid goes down

Two water systems fail during an outage, on different clocks.

Municipal water fails on a delay. Pump stations have limited on-site generation. Pressure in the distribution mains holds for a while on residual head, then falls. Once pressure drops below roughly 20 psi, contamination can enter the system and the operator issues a boil-water notice.

During Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, 1,985 Texas water systems issued boil-water notices, covering 16,351,788 people at peak, per TCEQ's after-action review, more than 40% of the state's 4,647 community public water systems, knocked out by loss of power to the pumps. One storm took water away from more people than live in Ohio.

Well water fails instantly. A residential submersible sits 100 to 400 feet down on a 240V motor. When the breaker opens, production stops in the same second. The pressure tank holds 20 to 60 gallons, and once that's gone, so is the shower. Two-wire configurations without a soft start can pull four to six times running amps at startup, which is why an undersized inverter or generator faults before the pump ever turns.

What a Hydropack needs to run

To size backup power, you only need three numbers: how much power the unit uses while running, the extra jolt it draws at startup, and the breaker size to match. All three models plug into 220-volt power — the same kind of outlet your electric dryer or oven uses.

The surge-to-running ratio stays under 1.4x across the line. That is far friendlier than a well pump or a legacy AC condenser, and it means an inverter or generator already sized for your house is usually close to what you need. Note the internal storage column. Every unit carries a buffer of its own before you add an external cistern, 74 gallons on the Hydropack and Hydropack X.

That matters more than it looks in an outage, and we'll come back to it.

What a battery actually buys you

Here is the cleanest way to think about it, and it holds regardless of how fast you choose to run the unit: a battery buys you gallons, not hours.

Every Hydropack produces at 0.24 kWh per liter, about 0.9 kWh per gallon at rated conditions. A Tesla Powerwall 3 holds 13.5 kWh usable. Divide one by the other and a full Powerwall is 15 gallons of water. Three Powerwalls, carrying no other load at all, get you to 45.

In a real outage that battery is also running the fridge, the well pump, and a mini-split. It was never going to be your water supply.

Now compare storage. A 500-gallon cistern costs roughly a dollar a gallon of capacity and holds the freshwater equivalent of about ten Powerwalls. Sized against Ready.gov's one-gallon-per-person-per-day guidance, it puts months of drinking and cooking water on hand for a family of four.

Batteries keep the house alive. Stored water keeps you in water. The Hydropack refills the store whenever power and humidity allow.

Can a propane generator run a Hydropack?

The most common question we get is a version of the same one: "Do you have propane ones?"

No. Aquaria does not make a propane-powered or fuel-driven Hydropack. Every model runs on 220V AC.

That is deliberate. A "propane atmospheric water generator" is a propane generator and an AC water generator in one enclosure. We would rather you own those separately: you keep the generator for every other load in the outage, you service one engine instead of two, and when the generator eventually needs replacing you replace a generator, not your water system.

Sizing. For a Hydropack at 5.12 kW rated, a dual-fuel or tri-fuel standby in the 10 to 12 kW class fits: margin on continuous load, headroom for the 28.5 A surge, and capacity left for the fridge and a few circuits. For Hydropack X at 10.24 kW, step up to the 20 to 22 kW class, which many preparedness-minded homeowners already run for whole-home backup. In both cases the unit lands near half load on the generator, which is where these engines are most efficient.

Fuel. A 20 kW-class propane standby burns in the region of 2.3 gallons per hour at half load; a 10 to 12 kW unit runs roughly half that. A 500-gallon residential propane tank at the 80% safety fill holds 400 usable gallons, so a Hydropack X on a 22 kW genset has on the order of 170 hours of runtime in the yard. Check the figures against your own generator's spec sheet before you plan around them; consumption varies by model and load.

But you would not run it continuously. What works in a long outage is bursts: run the generator six or eight hours, fill your storage, top off the batteries, cover the other loads while it's running, shut it down. In favorable summer conditions a Hydropack X moves 65 to 80 gallons in a single eight-hour burst. Three bursts across a week is more water than a family of four will use.

What happens in a cold-weather outage

An AWG pulls moisture out of the air, so it can only make as much water as the air is actually carrying. Cold air holds far less moisture than warm air — and in a Uri-style ice storm, with single-digit temperatures and bone-dry air, there's almost nothing there to pull. That's why output falls off on any atmospheric water generator in those conditions, not just ours.

It's the same reason a cold glass barely sweats in winter but drips in a humid Texas summer: the water's only there to collect when the air is warm and humid.

How do you get water when it's too cold to produce?

A full cistern going into a winter storm is your water supply for the duration of the storm. The arithmetic of stored water beats trying to squeeze production out of a compressor in 20-degree dry air. When the front lifts and temperatures rebound into the 60s with rising humidity, the unit resumes and refills what you drew down.

Summer is the inverse. Hurricane-season outages come with heat and humidity, and high production, and a Hydropack with backup power will outproduce a municipal system that's been on a boil-water notice for the whole event. Summer is when the machine earns its place. Winter is when the storage does. You want both.

Is a grid-tied install really "off-grid"?

There is a comment on our socials that runs, roughly: I call BS, most of your installs are grid-tied.

That is true. Most Aquaria installs are grid-tied. Here is the reasoning.

Grid power in most US markets is still cheaper than the PV-and-battery capacity you would need to run a Hydropack fully off-grid. A grid-tied install lets the utility carry the base load, sizes the unit to actual water demand, and optimizes the array around self-consumption and outage backup rather than full autonomy. That is the same engineering logic behind most residential solar, and it is a defensible choice, not a contradiction.

A genuinely off-grid build is a different project: larger array, larger bank, days-of-autonomy sizing, and either a propane generator or a generous PV overbuild for cloudy stretches. Bigger scope, bigger check. The solar article walks through that sizing if that is the build you want.

Grid-tied buys resilience without the capital cost of full independence. Off-grid buys independence. Both are legitimate, they answer different questions.

A week without the grid

One household. Four people. Central Texas in June. Hydropack X feeding a 500-gallon cistern that happens to be sitting at 300 gallons when the outage starts, because tanks are rarely full when you need them to be. A 22 kW propane standby on a 500-gallon fuel tank. Consumption at 4 gallons per person per day; Ready.gov's minimum is 1 gallon for drinking, but real households washing dishes and bodies run 4 to 6.

Twenty generator hours across the week, roughly 46 gallons of propane, about a tenth of the tank in the yard, with close to two more months left at the same rhythm. The household came out of a seven-day event on its own water, with 68 gallons more in storage than it started with.

That is what "solvable arithmetic" means. It is not a heroic scenario. It is a generator running three mornings.

Where the real limits are

The cold-weather floor. Below 59°F ambient, output drops sharply. Below the operating minimum the unit does not produce meaningfully. This is true of atmospheric water generation as a technology, not of one machine.

The humidity floor. Every Hydropack is rated to >=25% relative humidity, and production climbs steeply with humidity above that. Arid inland sites need a design that runs the unit during daily humidity peaks and leans harder on stored buffer.

Filters. Keep a spare filter set on the shelf if weather can cut you off for weeks. Ordering during a regional event is the wrong time to discover you're due.

Hard freezes and plumbing. A freeze that damages house plumbing damages the delivery side of any water system, an AWG included. Freeze protection on external storage is part of a proper install.

Noise. The Hydropack and Hydropack S run at <=64 dB, the Hydropack X at <=70 dB, roughly a window AC unit and a bit above. Worth knowing before you site one under a bedroom window, and worth factoring alongside a generator running in the same yard.

What we don't make. No fuel-driven unit. No solar-integrated single box. Hydropack is a whole-home system that integrates with the electrical, plumbing, and storage you already have or are planning.

FAQ

What happens to my water when there's no electricity?

Municipal pressure fades over hours to a day and can trigger a boil-water notice; well pumps stop instantly. An AWG is an electrical load, so it needs backup power to keep producing. The workable plan is stored water, refilled by the Hydropack whenever backup power is available.

Do you have propane ones?

No. The Hydropack line runs on 220V AC. The equivalent for grid-down is a propane, dual-fuel, or tri-fuel standby generator connected through a manual transfer switch or interlock kit, sized for continuous plus surge load. A 12 kW standby handles the Hydropack; 20 to 22 kW handles the Hydropack X.

Can it run on a generator?

Yes, on any correctly sized 220V generator. Rated draw is 3.00 / 5.12 / 10.24 kW across S, Hydropack, and X, with startup surges of 16.5 / 28.5 / 48.5 A and breakers of 20A / 30A / 50A double pole. Match the generator to those numbers with margin.

Does it work if the grid is down for a week?

Yes, with storage sized for your household, a backup power source, and, in cold-weather events, enough water already stored to bridge the days the unit cannot produce. The week-long scenario above walks through what that looks like for a family of four in Texas heat.

How much water does the unit hold on its own?

The Hydropack and Hydropack X carry 74 gallons of internal storage; the Hydropack S carries 31.7. That is your baseline buffer before any external cistern, and it is roughly a day of full household use for a family of four.

Is a Hydropack a substitute for a well?

Where a well exists but the water needs treatment, it can be the cleaner primary. Where you already have a producing well on a healthy aquifer and a generator sized for the pump surge, the well is usually the lower-cost source, we will tell you that.
